Actors strive for clichés...

I'm finally moved in and sorted. The only real expenditure from now until leaving is basically food. Albeit that is normally a big one, it does mean that most of the expensive bits are done and out of the way, leaving my study at the forefront of my mind. Speaking of which, today was my first day of study.

The Stella Adler School is hidden away in the middle of Hollywood Blvd and very easily missable as I found out. It's up some stairs next to a few shops and more people selling tours of everything, you'd think they would try to find a part of the market that wasn't flooded right?! Anyway, the school is nice inside. I say nice, because it isn't anything flamboyant or over the top, it's just.. nice. With plenty of acting studios littered around it, a few small theatres and then their main theatre opposite the reception area. It wasn't until I got into my first class that I found out what all the fuss was about.

The class was advanced technique, with Mr Milton Justice. This class was only about 7 people big, not including Milton, so 8 total, making for a much more intimate learning experience than I'm used to at Unitec (where the classes sit around 17-20 people roughly). The class consisted of a lot of discussion, as it lasted for 3 hours, and some improvisational style mini-workshops thrown in. I've not got time to write exactly everything about the classes today, as I just don't want to a) bore you and b) write a million word long essay every day, but suffice to say it opened up a lot of thinking to do between now and our next class with him (on Wednesday). One quote i will make though, was a quote Milton recalled from Stella Adler herself, that amused me slightly, and that was "When you stand on the stage you must have a sense that you are addressing the whole world, and that what you say is so important the whole world must listen", this I feel sums up an Actors reason for being on the stage in the first place, regardless of what the message is you are trying to portray. Another amusing quote was "All actors strive for clichés, it's natural". This just made me chuckle, as I know how true it really is.

The class after was a Rehearsal Technique class, where there ended up being just 4 of us (including the teacher), so the class ended up being a little more personal than what she had planned, more a getting to know each other and chat about Stella Adler and her ideals. Still, it was extremely interesting and informative, especially as there was only 3 of us and the teacher. Especially after learning she had learnt from Stella Adler herself, alongside Milton.

That's it for today, I'm now going to go back to my room, crash for a bit, or maybe read my book in the lovely, warm LA sun.
