Today I only had one class to attend, of which I have had some tutoring in beforehand. The Alexander Technique is the technique of doing less. Yes that's right, the main idea behind the Alexander Technique is to do release muscle stress and posture problems as it were, to make you hold yourself properly and use your body properly. Most of us hold a lot of tension in places we don't need, yet think we do. For example a lot of people sit in ways that they think are really totally comfortable and relaxed, yet they actually require more effort than if you were to sit in an aligned fashion. It's kind of hard for me to explain how and what this technique is, as I'm not a teacher of the technique and you do kind of have to experience working with it to really understand how it works.
My classes in this as Unitec had been about 16-20 people in size. This doesn't bode well for the way the technique is meant to be taught, as it requires a lot of 1 on 1 time between the student and the teacher to fully gain any useful results from it. Here though, I'm in a class of about 8, which makes for a much more personal experience during the class, and therefore an overall better learning experience. I'll be the first person to admit I wasn't the best at working in these classes at Unitec, yet with the smaller class size here, and the way the teacher teachers, I seem a lot more in touch with the classes, and feel like I have already learnt more in one class, than a whole term at Unitec.
Not to say the teacher a Unitec is bad, she's lovely, but the class size just didn't work. So far my experiences here have been all good, tough but good. I'll expand in this all in more detail when I have more time to blog :)
